Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the development of brown or gray-brown patches on the face, particularly on areas that are frequently exposed to sunlight. Melasma is more common in women than men, and it often develops during pregnancy (known as chloasma or the "mask of pregnancy"), but it can also occur in men and women who are not pregnant.

The exact cause of melasma is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development:

Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during pregnancy, can trigger the development of melasma. It is thought that the hormones estrogen and progesterone, as well as melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), play a role in stimulating melanocytes (cells that produce melanin) and increasing melanin production in the skin.

Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a significant contributing factor to melasma. Sun exposure can exacerbate existing melasma and stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin, leading to the darkening of patches on the skin.

Genetic Predisposition: There may be a genetic component to melasma, as it often runs in families.

Hormonal Medications: Certain medications, such as oral contraceptives (birth control pills) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), can increase the risk of developing melasma by affecting hormone levels in the body.

Melasma is typically diagnosed based on its characteristic appearance on the skin, without the need for additional tests. Treatment options for melasma aim to lighten the affected patches and prevent further darkening. These may include topical treatments containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, corticosteroids, azelaic acid, or kojic acid, as well as procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapy, or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. Sun protection, including wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and protective clothing, is essential for managing melasma and preventing its recurrence, as sun exposure can worsen the condition.
